In 2024, Cyphers for Justice (CFJ) was registered as an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization. Since 2025, CFJ has been registered with the NY State Bureau of Public Charities. CFJ was originally founded in 2012 as a program within the Edmund W. Gordon Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS, formerly Urban and Minority Education or IUME) at Teachers College, Columbia University, in partnership with the College Now Program at Queens College of the City University of New York. 
Waivers and Disclaimers. All individuals (adults and minors), regardless of affiliation, travel to/from and participate in CFJ activities entirely on their own responsibility and indemnify, defend, and hold harmless both CFJ (leadership, volunteers, allies, staff) and any host sites (such as Queens College, Teachers College, and/or FDAII) from any claims, damages, or liabilities arising from program activities, except where prohibited by law. The views of CFJ board members, adult allies, and youth participants are strictly their own and do not represent the views of the CFJ program or any of their partners or host institutions.
